Wednesday Writer’s Cafe 6/22

There is no point in waiting til tonight to post this, I’m won’t be at Cafe. Once again I am dealing with stuff for the club, compounded by my lack of baby sitter. I need to find a solution to that little kerfluffle at some point.

In the mean time, I have stupendous news. I finished my spy novel. Yes, you read that right, after 4.5 years of work, I am done with my first draft. ROFL

It will not be another 4.5 years til publish. With a little luck, how about 4.5 months til publish. Like that?

Want to help? I need two rounds of beta readers. I know what you’re thinking, critique partner, hello? Ok, so for my first book that was my hubs. That worked pretty well except he’s slow as hell to get it back to me, he has a full life and a demanding wife, oh wait…

It was him for my second book too. Which didn’t work well, he knew all the twists ahead of time because he knows how my brain works which led to me dropping that book. So, skipping the hubs til later in the process.

First round of beta, I want writers, mostly. I have a great reviewer all queued up to sink her teeth in. So my fellow writers, who wants to tear it all to pieces?

Don’t worry my lovely readers, your turn is coming. Soon, I promise.

I’ve decided to report on my stated 2016 goals each Wednesday at cafe for a little prod of accountability.

– Participate in one flash fiction challenge per month.

√ Nothing for June, but hey I finished my Spy Novel, cut me some slack. LOL

– Prepare and teach “Nano to Publish”.

√ Rolling ahead. We got a new guy last time. But that’s going well. I was able to get him a critique partner and he’ll just be five months behind the rest of us. No worries. I’ll post about the class this upcoming weekend.

– Any time I am not actively working on my 2015 Nano Novel, write 2500 words per week on my spy novel until it is done. (After four years, it’s time to put this mess to bed.)

√ I did it, I did it, I said that I would do it and indeed I did.

Non writing goals

– Prepare and teach two classes at the coop for the 2016-2017 school year.

√ Yeah, yeah, I’ve done jack all on this this week.

– Take better care of my body, ie. stop compulsively painting, crocheting, and writing until my back or shoulder is so tore I can barely use either.

√ Check.

– yoga daily.

√ Er, getting back to that. I got a little side tracked last week.

Wednesday Writer’s Cafe 6/15

So my regular Wednesday night baby sitter, is gone for the summer. slaps forehead.

This means I get to take my kiddo to Writer’s Cafe. sigh. There are worse things. But it makes everything more complicated.

This last weekend was Maple Valley Days. I manned a booth for an insane 27 hours over the course of three days. I sold two books. Possibly the worst ROI ever. LOL. It wasn’t just me though. It was like we were the black hole booth. No one wanted to stop at us. Or if they did, in response to our opening, “We’re a cooperative of seven locals authors, we’ve either written or read everything on the table so let us know if you have any questions,” we heard “I haven’t heard of any of these authors.” um, gee, I heard Stephen King, J.K. Rowling and James Patterson declined to attend this year, sorry to disappoint you. LOL

Oh well, chalk it up to a learning experience and move on.

In the cool stuff category, I just got an email from a publisher asking if I want to review an early galley of an upcoming book by an author I had previous reviewed on the blog. How cool is that?

I’ve decided to report on my stated 2016 goals each Wednesday at cafe for a little prod of accountability.

– Participate in one flash fiction challenge per month.

√ um….June isn’t over yet right? right.

– Prepare and teach “Nano to Publish”.

√ Rolling, rolling, rolling.

– Any time I am not actively working on my 2015 Nano Novel, write 2500 words per week on my spy novel until it is done. (After four years, it’s time to put this mess to bed.)

-A hop, skip, and jump from being done, baby, done. I would like 3-4 authors who would like to give author beta. Contact me if you’re interested.

Non writing goals

– Prepare and teach two classes at the coop for the 2016-2017 school year.

√ I ordered some book from the library so I can start  developing that geography class. Does that count? LOL

– Take better care of my body, ie. stop compulsively painting, crocheting, and writing until my back or shoulder is so tore I can barely use either.

√ Check, Check.

– yoga daily.

√ er not so check. I got off schedule on my trip to Cali but I’m working back around to normal.

Wednesday Writer’s No Cafe 6/8

I’m bacccckkkkk. Yes I have returned from the land of sun. It was hot. Not like I think I could wear a skirt today and not have goose bumps hot, but dear god I need water and is that really triple digits hot. For a break, I took the kiddo to SF for a day, tried to convince him he really did need his coat despite the fact that it was 92 at 10 in the morning at Opa’s house. He didn’t believe me. Guess who walked across the Golden Gate Bridge in mommy’s sweater with his teeth chattering? Yeah.

Anyway, I am once again not at Cafe. This is getting ridiculous. I am at yet another board meeting, this one to placate the membership who is angry the county has imposed new regulations on us. Somehow the membership thinks this is all the board’s fault. Sigh. Right.

I managed only a bit of writing on the road trip, big surprise there. But I am committing right now to you my semi loyal readers, I will finish my spy novel by the end of June. Since I need a new critique partner, I will be going straight to a beta style of edits. Who wants first pass?

If you’re local to the Seattle area and looking for something fun to do this weekend, FreeValley Publishing will be hosting a booth at the Maple Valley Days Festival. Stop by and see us; bored writers are dangerous, we might write more.

Wed No Cafe Suprise

mmmmm…Donuts….I don’t care where they build a donut shop….if they’re gluten free I’ll drive there. My favorite donut shop is actually about three hours away from where I live and I do indeed drive all the way there for the incredible quality of gluten free donuts several times a year…does that make me a freak? Maybe…it definitely Donuts_Covermakes me a foodie though. As a foodie I have to tell you about Donuts in an Empty Field by Rachel Barnard because the only thing better than food is reading about food (no calories that way.)
Launching on National Donut Day, June 3rd if you don’t know, Donuts in an Empty Field is a young adult novel about two best friends, the local food challenge, and a mysterious bucket list. The more main character Vanessa fails the food challenge, the more she takes it out on the boy she blames for her father’s death because letting go of anger is life’s greatest challenge.
Let’s talk to Rachel a bit and then an excerpt from the book….

An easy one… What would you do if you were the last person on this earth?
How would I know I was the last person on earth? I would probably cry and then go searching for chocolate.
ummmm, chocolate….er….sorry got distracted there, If you could eliminate one thing from your daily schedule, I’m guess it wouldn’t be chocolate, but what would it be and why?
I would eliminate sleep if I could get away with it, because even though I dearly love my sleep, if I didn’t need to I wouldn’t. I would have seven or more hours every day to do more things! I always want more time in the day to get things done.

Don’t we all. Ok Let’s get it over with,  What made you decide to start writing? Was this something you always thought you’d do?
Ever since I learned how to read and write, I’ve been writing. I’ve written my autobiography many times over, even though I’ve only just started stacking up life events worthy of being told. I always knew I was going to write, the question was whether I could rely on it as a career. That is still the question and I have yet to quit my day job to write full time. I like not having to rely on my creative outlet to support me and to not feel like I have to finish within a certain time frame for any of my writing projects.

Does not having the pressure help you avoid writers block?

Unlike most writers I know or have read about, I don’t write every day. When the particular story that I’m thinking about is pressing to get out, I write it until it’s finished. That’s the easy part. The part that usually gives me writer’s block is editing and fixing up the manuscript until it’s ready for public consumption. To get through this writer’s block, I write out a detailed schedule (that I don’t always stick with) to complete the writing/editing and try to tell people my goals so that I feel compelled to reach them. I also make the time to write so I don’t have as many excuses to not write. Doing anything writer-reader related usually kicks up my inspiration to continue and thinking about the story itself helps me get past any stickler writer’s block moments when I’m not sure where to go next.

Well it clearly works for you. Donuts is your third published work, Can you tell us about your other works?

My first novel, Ataxia and the Ravine of Lost Dreams, is about a young girl who thinks that she can overthrow the government and goes to great lengths to put herself in the right position to do so, but is thwarted by both the new transfer student and her own self-centered view of the world. The story centers on her time at an elite Academy and how the students there are trained to become world leaders.

My second novel is a young adult low-magic fantasy – fairy tale adaptation. It is loosely based on Beauty and the Beast and is about learning to accept yourself and others. It’s called At One’s Beast, a play on the words ‘at one’s best’ and is told from the point of view of the three main characters, Alcina (the sacrifice), Zos (the beast), and Aethon (the third wheel).

I have to confess I haven’t read either but my husband loved Ataxia. So tell us a little about Donuts in an Empty Field, Why would someone pick up and read this book?
Donuts in an Empty Field is for a young adult audience, specifically teenagers or emerging adults who want to read about a protagonist who’s working through grief and how to be a best friend amidst personal issues. This book is also a fun insight into the teenage mind and what really goes on after school.
Sounds like that would scare a few parents, LOL. Were there any alternate endings you considered?
No, actually, the ending was always clear to me in my mind. Only the details changed.
I love that. Only the details changed. Last quick question before you read an excerpt, Song that fits the book for theme song?
Raspberry Beret by Prince.
Awesome
An excerpt from Chapter 3:
Becky and Anja, Nichole’s other friends sit down with us. I turn away so Nichole won’t see my disgruntled look as I resettle on the bench to make room. Anja is more overweight than I am, but it only adds to her beauty. She has the most inviting heart shaped face I’ve ever seen and she carries her weight in womanly curves. It helps that she’s taller than I am so the weight is better distributed. Becky is the powerhouse tanned white girl that nobody
wants to piss off. She is so athletic she almost joined the football team, but opted for jujitsu instead when there was a scheduling conflict. Nichole turns to talk with Becky and I fidget.“Aren’t you going to eat?” Anja asks me.I sit on my hands to stop them from moving and shake my head.

“I’m not really hungry,” I lie.

She nods like she understands, but she doesn’t. None of them do. If I start eating right now I might never stop. Another thank you to Dad. If I’m not angry, I’m hungry and I have to be careful with my self-control. Not that I never eat… I just don’t want to eat junk in front of Nichole’s judgmental friends.

Nichole offers me her other slice of pizza.

“No thanks, I’m good,” I say, trying not to lick my lips at the hint of fresh dough scent that lingers in the air.

Becky waves to someone walking up to the table. He steps forward, and suddenly all my attention is on him. With burn scars bubbling up his neck and cheeks, everybody at the table pays attention to the new guy. He looks down at the table and scuffs a toe in the pavement, his tray of cafeteria food wobbling in his hands. I try to figure out what’s wrong with his left hand and it takes me a moment to realize that he’s missing two fingers. The remaining fingers are misshapen and swollen-looking.

Nichole gets up beside me. “Becky,” she says, her voice trailing off, as she just stands there. She glances beside Becky pointedly and wrinkles her nose slightly, before turning back to Becky.

“This is my younger brother, Ben,” Becky says.

Wednesday No Writer’s Cafe Again 5/25

Seriously, I should just stop calling the Wednesday post Writer’s Cafe because I never get there anymore. Feels like months. Waves at the pizza crowd. Miss you!

Ok so why am I not there? Yeah, emergency executive meeting of the club board. Yes, again they are derailing my life for more drama. I think since I returned from Hawaii last Monday I have seen about 300 emails. Way too much of it backstabbing, half truthing, bull shit. (pardon my language)

Several members may or may not be resigning tonight, including me. I won’t go on like this. Either people commit to putting on their big boy/girl pants and acting like the adults we are supposed to be, or I’m done. I can’t carry the emotional burden of this crap for a pool. It’s not that important.

Since I have returned, I have not written a single word on my spy novel that is practically at the finish line. I haven’t spent a single minute on the novel I am developmentally editing. I’ve barely been able to get my blog posts up and half of those were done ahead of time. Speaking of I’m leaving on Saturday for a road trip with my kiddo and I haven’t preposted for those ten days yet.

All of my spare time has been sucked up my the drama and drama fall out or the emotional hang over of dealing with the former. Enough. Done. I’m out. Drops the microphone.

I’ve decided to report on my stated 2016 goals each Wednesday at cafe for a little prod of accountability.

– Participate in one flash fiction challenge per month.

√ I think I missed May. And it ain’t gonna happen between now and Saturday. LOL. I did do a couple in April. Short ones. Single liners on a topic and the like. It was fun.

– Prepare and teach “Nano to Publish”.

√ Rolling right along. I think we will have 8 new books out of this class by the end of the year. I’m so excited by that. A year’s worth of work and it will be worth something.

– Any time I am not actively working on my 2015 Nano Novel(trashed), write 2500 words per week on my spy novel until it is done. (After four years, it’s time to put this mess to bed.)

√ Not a word this week. I wrote a lot on the cruise though. It’s really cleaned up. I need to write one more bridging scene and then finish the big action blow out on the ship.

Non writing goals

– Prepare and teach two classes at the coop for the 2016-2017 school year.

√ Yep. People have actually signed up for both my classes, Nano and Geography. One family actually joined the coop just so their daughter could take my Nano class. LOL.

– Take better care of my body, ie. stop compulsively painting, crocheting, and writing until my back or shoulder is so tore I can barely use either.

√ Been doing good on this although the kiddo did buy me a new paint by number for Mother’s Day. LOL. It’s half done in the last week. LOL. I find it very soothing and with all the club drama, I needed to be soothed.

– yoga daily.

√ Yeah. Actually this is happening, although some days are still only 15 minutes.

Wednesday No Cafe 5/4

ALOHA!

The family is away for vacation for the next bit. I’m taking a much needed break from the real world to relax, work on my tan, and dabble in my spy novel. I know I’m working on vacation but I have a lot going on these days and if I didn’t take advantage of 11 days of child care my son loves to work on my spy novel I would be a bad, bad author.

So while I burn lean muscle mass coming up with fun ways to get my favorite spies into deep trouble and then back out of it again, you can sit back and enjoy a variety of pre-scheduled posts. On the plus side I’m doing a bunch of reading while gone as well and you can look forward to some new books reviews and accompanying author interviews when I return.

Wednesday Writer’s Cafe 3/23

Tonight’s post will be full of shock and awe, are you ready? Are you sitting down? Do you have your coffee?

A) I am actually at write in! Woot! laughing. It’s been a rough month but here I am planning for Norwescon which starts tomorrow. Not that I am really going Thursday. I plan to drop a friend off, get my badge, drop my books off to the Indie writers table I am hawking my wares at (quick shout out to Jeff from Clockwork Dragon), and give the kiddo a tour of where mommy will be spending the weekend.

B) I have jettisoned my murder mystery. The facts, just the fact. I hate it. I hated writing it during nano. I had a miserable time doing Nano last year and that misery has clung to the draft like the stench of rotten sushi clings to the interior of your car when your kiddo drops a couple of salmon rolls under the seat and doesn’t tell you. I was continuing to work on it because I felt I owed it to the Nano to Publish folks to stay on the same time line I was asking them to meet. However Sheri reminded me that I published on this schedule last year, so I’m not really asking them to do anything I haven’t done. So it’s over. I stuck a fork in it.

C) My spy novel is on like donkey kong.

I’ve decided to report on my stated 2016 goals each Wednesday at cafe for a little prod of accountability. The goals have been adjusted to reflect those I have completed and those I have dropped as not worthy at this time. LOL

– Participate in one flash fiction challenge per month.

√ Er, March is almost over and I haven’t done jack all for this. And really I am not going to before the end of the month. I am off to Norwescon, then to Lego land. Maybe just maybe I’ll be inspired somewhere along that mess but it’s doubtful.

– Prepare and teach “Nano to Publish”.

√ Going swimmingly. March was awesome and you can read all about that this weekend.

– Any time I am not actively working on my 2015 Nano Novel, write 2500 words per week on my spy novel until it is done. (After four years, it’s time to put this mess to bed.)

√ I’m working on it. I’m actually working on it.

Non writing goals

– Prepare and teach two classes at the coop for the 2016-2017 school year.

√ um, this is very up in the air. There’s some stuff going on. More when I can.

– Take better care of my body, ie. stop compulsively painting, crocheting, and writing until my back or shoulder is so tore I can barely use either.

√ I kind of got into a little painting obsession but I have not caused myself any pain. LOL

– yoga daily.

√ More or less.

Wednesday Writer’s Cafe 3/16

Some days being a mom is tough. Like when your adorably cute six year old says “please mommy cancel my sitter and stay home with me tonight” with big tired eyes.

This week has been interesting. Time change is always a big problem for me. Compounded by the fact that getting up at five was still a struggle even though I had been doing it for 3 months. So now five is four. bleh. I’ve been getting up at the new 630. shaking head.

Which might explain why I feel like I am making zero progress with my murder mystery. On the other hand a new idea for a new novel popped into my head and despite the fact that I attempted to purge said idea by writing it down, the idea won’t leave me alone. I keep coming up with new layers to the story I want to leave me alone so I can finish this darn murder. LOL.

I finally hit 100 followers. It only took 18 months. (snort, only) A quick shout out to the lovely Sue over at Artist Path.

I’ve decided to report on my stated 2016 goals each Wednesday at cafe for a little prod of accountability.

– Participate in one flash fiction challenge per month.

√ er…cruddle, I really should get on this for March eh?

– Prepare and teach “Nano to Publish”.

√ This Saturday is our March workshop. We’re still overhauling our work to take it to beta next month. I also taught a special session class Tuesday on blogging to three of the N to P participants.

– Edit my 2015 Nano Novel for 2016 publication.

√ um, so this is going rather slowly right now. I decided to cut this group interrogation scene and instead work the conversations in during a reception after the murdered guy’s funeral. I’ve written the funeral but that’s about as far as I’ve gotten this week.

– Any time I am not actively working on my 2015 Nano Novel, write 2500 words per week on my spy novel until it is done. (After four years, it’s time to put this mess to bed.)

-Non Applicable at this time.

Non writing goals

– Prepare and teach two classes at the coop for the 2016-2017 school year.

√ sigh, this is all so messy. We’re half way through mock registration and NO one wants my nano class. People are lining up for the geography class I made up on the spur of the moment though. Laughing. Ain’t that always the way?

– Take better care of my body, ie. stop compulsively painting, crocheting, and writing until my back or shoulder is so tore I can barely use either.

√ I’ll admit it, there was a little too much painting last weekend.

– yoga daily.

√ laugh, snort, laugh. I did however get my son addicted to yoga though. I convinced him being more flexible will help him with capoeira.

Wednesday Writer’s Cafe 3/9

It’s been an interesting week. I am once again spending way too much time on the scheduling committee compounded by a few “entertaining” discoveries.

A) We decided to use Rob’s Rules for the committee since one member had taken on an attitude of “my word is the last word.” LOL, sure it is, that’s why we’re a committee of seven, not of one. After we did that and concluded that meeting the member asked, after I left, if we were using Rob’s Rules because I was intimidated by him. Seriously? grow the bleep up. We’re using Rob’s rules because you’re acting like a bleep-hat.

B) after what amounts to somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 hours of work in the last two weeks, we got word that one of our former students is coming back next year. A student in a wheel chair. The facility we rent has no elevator. So once this kid decides what he wants to take we will have to rearrange the entire schedule to move the classes he wants downstairs and to the day that’s convenient for him. This is not a small coop. We have 130+ students. We offer 65+ k-12 classes packed into 7 rooms (plus outside) on two days of the week. So we could be completely redoing all of this grueling work. I’ll just stab myself in the eye now and be done with it.

Let’s see, in the awesome column, a woman who lives in my neighborhood posted she had a bunch of English newspapers, including some from WWII and did anyone want them? SCORE!

In the “you might be a freak” column. I have a sitter tonight but the desperate desire to be alone with a good book was so high, I didn’t go out. I left the sitter downstairs to entertain my kiddo and I’m hiding upstairs in the library with a can of apple pie filling and a good book. Well hundreds of good books on the shelves around me, but one good book in my hand.

I’ve decided to report on my stated 2016 goals each Wednesday at cafe for a little prod of accountability. You might notice I finally cleaned it up a bit and removed the goals that are completed.

– Participate in one flash fiction challenge per month.

√ eh, haven’t done one for March yet because I’m spending all my time working on the schedule. See above diatribe.

– Prepare and teach “Nano to Publish”.

√ Teaching.

– Edit my 2015 Nano Novel for 2016 publication.

√ ugh not much this week. Damn scheduling committee. And the worst part is if I get elected as VP of education, and no one is running against me, I have to do this committee again next year.

√ Yeah. I’m on the mock schedule with nano to publish and a class that’s using a geographical approach to look at the unique history and literature of an area. By next week I should know if anyone would sign up for either. Mock schedule goes out this Friday.

– Take better care of my body, ie. stop compulsively painting, crocheting, and writing until my back or shoulder is so tore I can barely use either. Which leads me to …

√ Done good this week.

– yoga daily.

√ five out of seven ain’t bad.

Wednesday Writer’s Cafe 3/2

Wow, it’s March already. How the bleep did that happen? In no time at all con will be here, then Legoland, then Hawaii thank god. I expect this whole year to slide by in a wash of head shaking, “wait, where did x go?”

So the Norwescon schedule is up and I want to know what idiot thought it was a good idea to schedule So You’ve Finished a First Draft, Catching Readers, Hook, Line, & Sinker, Beta Better, and Single Combat for Writers: Creating Believable Violence all in the same hour on the same day? I need a time turner.

Also this week, our friends J and A decided to go to Hawaii with us in May. Woot. This reminded me that I hadn’t put the family passport information into the cruise website yet. Which led me to discover … my passport expired. Bleep bleep bleepity bleep.

So in between putting in a couple hours a day on the schedule for the coop next year, double checking Scripting the Truth for errors before my next order, and editing my murder mystery for Beta…I am breathless. In fact, I’m so busy I had to spend the first 45 minutes of write in figuring out what I am going to cook for the rest of the week so I can go get groceries on the way home. LOL

I’ve decided to report on my stated 2016 goals each Wednesday at cafe for a little prod of accountability.

– Research marketing locations for the next free giveaway for Scripting the Truth. Figure out the Reddit problem. Fine tune my categorization on amazon.

√ This is done. I might just remove this goal. I have a list of marketing locations. I joined a publishing coop for the year to get more of my face out there.

– Write 2500 plus words per week on my 2015 Nano novel til completion. (Only another 5-6 weeks to go on that, I think.)

√ Done. Already back from first critique.

– Participate in one flash fiction challenge per month.

√ I did two technically in February but both were super short. One was to write an opening line to a novel. (Watch as she sits on the couch working on her laptop, one hand occasionally petting the sleeping dog next to her.) I was leaving it open so the novel could go a myriad of ways.

The other was to put the working title of your current WIP into an anagram site and pick an anagram of your title. There were over 70K+ anagrams of Sweeping it Under the Rug. LOL. Both challenges came from Dan Alatorre.

– Prepare and teach “Nano to Publish”.

√ January and February done. People are moving forward. It’s early still but I’m excited that only the people who weren’t ready to pull the trigger in January didn’t come back in February. Everyone came back. Everyone is still working forward. We even gained a member.

– Edit my 2015 Nano Novel for 2016 publication.

√ Edited 21 chapters this week including some pretty big rewrites to fix some issues. It’s still not where I want it but I think I will be ready to go to Beta in a month. Start thinking about if you want on my beta team.

√ This got so out of control. I am now teaching 3 classes more or less. laughing. It’s in flux. And of course it depends on whether people sign up for my classes but still.

– Take better care of my body, ie. stop compulsively painting, crocheting, and writing until my back or shoulder is so tore I can barely use either. Which leads me to …

√ Pretty good this week, although a long stretch with a sander left one shoulder a little cranky. I’m on another house project. This one is just a book case so no pictures, I think.

– yoga daily.

√ Nope. LOL. But at least every other day. The three weeks I was sick, exhausted, sick, exhausted, sick really killed my daily habit. But I am building it back up.
